Help force NI Water to respect our beaches

You can help me raise water purity standards on our local beaches this year by simply taking photos when you are at the beach during 2014.

To get the highest standards of water purity in our local beaches, we have to be recognised as ‘Bathing Waters’ under the EU directive – and need to back it up with photos showing the beaches are used for walking, bathing and family outings.

Only photographs from this year’s bathing water season onwards can be considered. There have to be a minimum of 45 bathers on one occasion or 100 beach users on two occasions.

If you or your family can organise pictures like this (bring 45 friends – I am!) then email, Facebook or post them to me as part of this campaign.

27th November Cadogan passes motion in Council to heighten status of Lecale beaches

As part of his campaign to get EU recognition for Lecales beaches, Cadogan gets council resources passed to support application under EU Directive – cutting out the NI Dept of Environment – When we get our beaches recognised – NI Water will then be forced to stop dicharging sewerage on our beaches and give the Lecale Coast the same recognition as the ‘Gold Coast’

nov 6 2013 ballyhornan a sewage by CadoganEnright
Cllr Cadogan Enright has responded to protests by Ballyhornan residents over the low quality of their new sewage plant by making a series of FoI requests.

These clearly show that the Gold Coast in North Down has top class sewage treatment as NIEA classifies it beaches as ‘bathing waters’ BUT NIEA did not classify any of Lecales beaches as ‘bathing waters’ so NI Water is not legally obliged to deliver the same level of treatment – so Ballyhornan only gets ‘sieving’ before discharge to the beach.

Cllr Enright has taken this up as a campaign, and is putting a motion to council to ensure that our local beaches are identified as ‘bathing waters’ under EU the EU Directive to BOTH promote Tourism and to force NI Water to clean up our beaches in Lecale

17th April 2013 NI Water fails Lecale Coast Tourism by CadoganEnright
Contrary to all expectations, the new Ardglass sewerage scheme at Ardtole fails to deliver for the Lecale Coast in the same manner that NI Water delivered for the Gold Coast in North Down.

There was nothing in the plan for piping sewage from Ballyhornan, Chapeltown, Coney Island or from Killough – leaving Lecale in a development backwater and unable to deliver a proper Tourist Product
